I'm saddened by the state of the music industry these days. Where my ladies at is illustrating a depressing and sinking industry. These poor women get trapped in a life where there is no escape. What are they going to do when they are 30 or 40? How are they going to make a living? Now is the time for them to get an education or figure out a way to get a job that they can keep for longer than a year or two.

I hate hearing that people think there is NO unity in hip-hop. I believe if there really was no unity the culture would have died out long ago. The less the positive images in the media don't negate the unity of the culture. This alone is proof that we need to show balance within the culture. Just like with any family you have good, bad, pretty and ugly, but they all show up at the reunion. Hip-hop culture is definitely still united -- we just have to get Uncle Ray Ray and Auntie Keisha to stop showing their asses. (All puns intended!)

Wow... I see we have a few degenerates sprinkled on this site.. let's be real folks.. the current state of hip-hop and music in general is destroying souls... All these "Men" and I use the term very loosely on here who say they don't care or why are we so critical obviously don't have sisters, female cousins, and hate their mothers.. Music is food for the soul.. and has "real" effects on the mental psyche.. ( I may be too deep for the "ig-net".. I'm from the hood and grew up in the projects in the heart of Bed-Stuy.. and its not cool to see young girls carrying themselves un-lady like because what they see on TV (aka the Devil's Numbing Device) and other forms of mass media. I love black women... I think their sexiest beings I've ever seen..I love my mother and all the females in my family so and if any so call man would attempt to exploit them or do them harm would find themselves in the ICU on permanent bed rest (ya smell me) We need to take pride not only in black women but women in general.. they are the chosen wisdom body of man.. thus the term W.O.Man (Wisdom Of Man)...not from the womb of man.. because the last time I checked I don't have a womb :-) These women are the facilitators of our continued existence on this planet.. we should enjoy their beauty, but we should not lead them into oblivion. Brothers on here who talk too stupid need to get a clue and stop being the corporate white man's dog.

I think people should stop buying this music and supporting an industry that uses women the way the hip hop industry uses women. It's degrading. Someone should stop these people from making so much money. We need to get back to the golden era of Hip Hop. Where are this generation's Native Tongues.

How can there be unity in hip-hop? this hip-hip world is growing every minute. millions of people are into hip-hop all over the planet. its impossible that all these people should agree on any one issue, except supporting hip-hop. Its a new world in hip hop - more global and diverse in everyway, especially in opinions and ideas.

first things first.. before hip-hop the music industry was shady.. and it will remain shady.. all it did was allow blacks who are uneducated to partake in it and make a lot of money by degenerating the youth.. The world isn't united.. what planet ya'll live on.. obviously not this one.. look around you there is no unity anywhere (well except with the gays and that don't count cuz they dont have a choice but to stick together).. hip-hop needs to transcend to a new level of greatness not go back in the past.. get it right..

I am upset at the people on here who believe that just because people are making money from the art form they live, breathe and create, that there cannot be UNITY. Hip Hop began as a resistance movement. Now it's a way of life, and a business model. I think we can have our cake and eat it too!

jennifer, i'm really wondering why this question of unity was asked. hip hop is notorious for creating and sustaining artists committed to uplifting women. this may come as a surprising statement given the nature of discussions on this website. think about some of the remarkable artists such as Public Enemy, Run DMC, Common, Talib Kweli, Dead Prez, Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco, The Roots and the great MC Lyte. Granted that in this list, few women have been listed - many if not all of the artists on this list have contributed positively to black identity and to womanhood. Not mention, hip hop around the world (check out arabic hip hop and french hip hop esp.) has been used as a catalyst for political change and rarely involve lyrics of misogyny. Maybe hip hop is a hyper-representation of American life, rather than hip hop being the reason for sexism in America. The industry is, afterall, merely 30 years old. Perhaps instead of asking whether there is unity in hip hop you might consider asking why record labels insist on selling music that is misogynistic rather than putting these music on the radio and promoting them beyond their niche. And what does it mean that 70% of purchasing power lies in white consumers hands? Whatever the customer wants, the customer gets right?

A lot of people would disagree. but i am glad you think it has uplifted you. more power to you! i totally agree that 70% of purchasing power is white america, and that hip hop has become more sexist and more violent since white people have gotten involved. as for why we are talking about UNITY, i think we need more. but i guess unity in hip hop would actually need social justice, right?
